TOMMY GAINES

TOMMY GAINES

TOMMY GAINES

Thomas Martin Gaines passed away at Duke University Hospital on Aug. 30, 2024.  He was surrounded by family at the time of his passing.

Tommy was born on Jan. 31, 1970, in Birmingham, Ala.  He was preceded in death by his mother Sally Gaines; survived by his wife Melissa Gaines, stepson Atticus Clarke, stepdaughters Katya and Ivy Totty, step-granddaughters Clara and Maxine, sister Robin Gaines, brother Steven Gaines, father James Gaines, and several nieces and nephews.

He grew up in Lexington, where he lived most of his adult life. Tommy was a Scarlet Hurricane and spent much of his working career at Nalco Water Company.

Tommy liked to go fast … He liked fast motorcycles, big trucks, and speeding down steep slopes on a bicycle or snowboard.  He loved animals, and he and Melissa had a zoo full, including at least 10 dogs, nine cats, two goats, two ferrets, a sugar glider, and several chickens over his tenure.   He loved his family and was a fierce friend to many.

He loved all kinds of music, especially live and loud music with a funky beat.  He and his wife traveled to as many concerts and festivals as they could and cherished those experiences with good friends.   He was an excellent drummer; the man had impeccable rhythm.  He was also an artist in his own right and admirable tradesman.

Tommy loved nature and lived for a pretty landscape.  He enjoyed the beach and spending time in the surf with his family.  He also relished his time in the woods, particularly falling asleep in full camouflage during hunting season.  Tommy appreciated good food, and though he often preferred his food fast, he was an excellent cook and very much enjoyed feeding others.

Tom was loved by those that knew him, and will be sorely missed by his friends and family.

A celebration of life will be held in the fall.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation be made to the Rockbridge SPCA.

Arrangements are by Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory.
