CAROL BUCKHALT
CAROL BUCKHALT
Carol lived a rich and fulfilling life characterized by her genuine, intelligent, and spunky personality.
Her father was a captain in the Merchant Marines, and she spent her childhood living in Peru and Puerto Rico before her family settled in Jacksonville, Fla.
Carol was a graduate of Robert E. Lee High School in Jacksonville, Fla., and earned her bachelor’s degree in business education from the University of Florida. She dedicated her career to education, teaching accounting and business classes at various community colleges. Carol eventually became the head of the Business Department at Southern Seminary College where she taught for over 12 years.
A devout member of the Trinity United Methodist Church on South Main Street in Lexington, Carol was deeply involved in church activities, often hosting large gatherings at her home under the motto “the more the merrier.” Her commitment to her faith, especially the youth groups, was profound and heartfelt.
C arol’s interests were as varied as they were rich; she was an avid reader, often juggling four books at once, and had a passion for studying history, playing cards (putting card sharks to shame), and solving crossword puzzles daily. She was a die-hard cat lover, talented piano player, and a beautiful seamstress. She would think nothing of making any type of clothes for the family for any occasion.
She and John traveled the world and loved exploring new lands, but also found real joy in building the home at Skyhigh, including every hands-on project you can think of including gardening, canning from their orchard, and cooking fresh venison and wild turkey for each thanksgiving meal. Her love for decorating during the holidays and cooking for her loved ones brought joy to many.
Carol also enjoyed watching her favorite shows, which included “Columbo,” “Antique Roadshow,” and “Lawrence Welk.”
She leaves behind a loving family, including her children Shelly Weaver of Beaufort, S.C., Mark Buckhalt (and wife Holly) of Lexington, and Holly Lyndon of Huntersville, N.C.; her sister Francia Nelson of Boulder, Colo.; grandchildren Grant, Kurt, Trent, Johnathon, Jordan, Joel, Chet, and Caroline; greatgrandchildren Uriah, Titus, Troah, Millie, Grady, Whit, and Greyson; and her cherished cat, Peanut.
Carol was preceded in death by her daughter Lynn Carol; her husband, John Edward Buckhalt; sisters Janet Croll and Lois Nelson; brother John Nelson; and her parents Florence and John Nelson Sr.
Visitation will be held 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, at Harrison’s Funeral Home in Lexington. The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 14, at the Trinity United Methodist Church, South Main Street, Lexington.
Carol Buckhalt’s life was a testament to her unwavering spirit and the profound impact she had on those around her. Her legacy of loyalty, warmth, wisdom, and generosity will continue to inspire and influence generations.
