PENNYHENNEMAN

Penelope was born on June 14, 1937, in Gouverneur, N.Y., the daughter of Edward Haile Case and Neeltje Van Bergen Case.

She attended Emma Willard School and Smith College, graduating with a bachelor’s degree from Smith in 1959. A year after graduating from college, she met Edward “Ned” Henneman, and they were married in Gouverneur, N.Y., on July 28, 1962. They moved to New York City where their three children, Neeltje Van Bergen Henneman, Edward Olmsted Henneman Jr. and Robert Haile Henneman, were all born.

In 1972 Penny, Ned and the kids moved to Lexington, where Ned ultimately joined the faculty at Washington and Lee University Law School. Penny and Ned found a home in Lexington and never left, living first on Honeysuckle Hill, then Shepherd Drive, and ultimately Kendal at Lexington. Penny also worked at W&L, first as an administrative assistant in the Dean of Students Office, and then as a member of the development office. Penny and Ned have been members of Grace Episcopal Church since they first arrived in Lexington.

Penny was a loving wife, mother, sister, daughter and grandmother. She loved family gatherings and got great pleasure from being with all of her children and grandchildren. She also loved her friends, and developed life-long friendships in Lexington.

She and Ned watched over 30 Super Bowls and ushered in the New Year into their 80s with the same group of close friends. Penny loved to entertain and was a wonderful hostess. Later in life Penny and Ned moved to Kendal at Lexington where they enjoyed great friendships and became deeply involved in the Kendal community.

Penny is preceded in death by her parents, Edward Haile Case and Neeltje Van Bergen Case. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Ned; her sister, Judy Case; her three children, Neeltje, Ted and Bob; daughters-in-law Amy Parr Henneman and Margaret Rozy Horlick; and five grandchildren, Bonnie Wells Henneman, Edward Olmsted Henneman III, Winifred Gracie Henneman, Nicholas Bruner Henneman and Rebecca Rose Henneman.

A service in honor of Penny will be held at a later date.

Remembrances may be made to Kendal at Lexington to the staff appreciation fund or Grace Episcopal Church. NG
