JERRY AUSTIN
With heavy hearts we announce that our beloved Jerry Lyle Austin passed away peacefully on Jan. 7, 2025, at the George Washington University Hospital in Washington, D.C., surrounded by family.
He was born in RockbridgeCounty, a son of John William and Zena Gilkeson Austin on Sept. 4, 1951. He grew up in Fairfield. In later years, Jerry had dual residences in Washington, D.C., and Lenexa, Kan.
Jerry graduated from Rockbridge High School, Class of 1969. He continued his education at the University of Richmond graduating with a bachelor of science degree in business.
Jerry was employed as an Independent Contractor as a Database Consultant for clients coast to coast.
Jerry had many interests. He especially enjoyed working crossword puzzles, music and the arts, traveling and spending time with family.
Survivors include the “Love of his life,” Joan Hilger-Mullen, and children that meant the world to him, Jennifer Mullen, Andrew Mullen (Jess) and Emily Mullen. He was a loving “Granddad” to Madeline, Jillian, Jake, Margaret, Ella and Caroline.
Jerry was a cherished brother to his three siblings, Roger Hale Austin (Hilda), John Clemmer Austin (Lee) and Mary Austin Pomerson (David). “Uncle Jerry” was adored and admired by numerous nieces and nephews.
Jerry will be remembered for his positive personality, kindness, dry wit, love of the outdoors and adventurous spirit. He touched the hearts of all that knew him.
He was a true “Virginia Gentleman.”
A service to celebrate his life is being scheduled and will be announced at a later date. Arrangements are being made through Demaine Funeral Home in Alexandria. Please see www.demainefuneralhomes.com for service information.
