RON McNEMAR

RON McNEMAR

Harold Randolph “Ron” McNemar completed his work in this life on Monday, Feb. 24, 2025.

Ron was born on Oct. 25, 1938, to William Paul “Mac” McNemar and Margaret (McSpadden) McNemar in rural Rockbridge County.

On Feb. 14, 1962, he married the love of his life, Mary Frances “Fran” (Tomlin) McNemar, who preceded him in death on Oct. 19, 2024. Ron is survived by his brother John (Merrie Gayle) McNemar and daughters Nina Blair (Steven) Reed of Nashville, Tenn., and Jodi McNemar (Kenny) Myers of Mt. Sidney. Also surviving are grandchildren John (Shannon) Reed, Andrew (Jessica) Reed with great-granddaughters Maddy and Charlotte, Kara (Alex) Carls, Selah (Jeff Messer) Myers and Kendal Myers. He is also survived by loving nieces, nephews and in-laws. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Bill McNemar of Arizona and Tom McNemar of Lexington.

Ron graduated from Virginia Military Institute in 1961 and was very devoted to VMI throughout his lifetime. He was an active alumnus and enjoyed friendships with classmates his entire life. He loved nothing more than to visit the campus regularly with family and friends for events and parades. He earned the rank of 1st lieutenant in the Army and worked for the federal government until retirement.

Ron spent most of his career as a civil engineer with the Daniel Boone National Forest based out of Winchester, Kentucky, where Ron, Fran, Nina and Jodi enjoyed many fun years. Ron was an engineer to the core, as in his spare time he created beautiful handmade wooden furniture and in his later years, stained glass.

When he and Fran retired to Fairfield, they restored, with great joy, their historic home, creating, restoring and customizing with their combined talents. Ron enjoyed his hobbies of coin collecting and model trains throughout his lifetime. He was as frugal as he was generous and greatly enjoyed the community of Fairfield Days when he could share his model train room.

Ron’s talents in building were extensive and something he really enjoyed, along with staying informed about news and current events. Ron always had a plan and enjoyed his schedules and lists, along with a good cup of coffee and many pet cats (and strays) over the years.

The family is especially thankful for the support from Connections Plus Hospice Services, Fairfield Presbyterian Church, and Havenwood Assisted Living.

Arrangements will be made by Harrison Funeral Home.

A celebration of life service will be at a future date at Fairfield Presbyterian Church. Interment will be private.

Donations can be made to Fairfield Presbyterian Church, Connections Plus Hospice, VMI Alumni Association, or the charity of your choice.
