DAVID YAWARS

DAVID YAWARS

David Edward Yawars, 77, of Lexington passed away peacefully in his sleep on March 11, 2025, at Kendal at Lexington, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on April 8, 1947, in Scranton, Pa., and was the son of Edward and Rowena Yawars. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Elaine Fox.

He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Carolyn Yawars; his daughter and son-in-law, Aspen and Ian McKenna of Hood River, Ore.; his son and daughter-in-law, Tad and Traci Yawars of Powhatan; and his cherished granddaughter, Rowan Anne McKenna. He was so very proud of each of them.

Dave grew up in Clarks Summit and Hummelstown, Pa., and graduated from Central Dauphin East High School.   He earned a bachelor of arts degree from Randolph-Macon College in Ashland and an associate’s degree in hotel and resort management from Paul Smith’s College in Saranac Lake, N.Y.

He was a dedicated long-time member of Oxford Presbyterian Church, where he served in numerous leadership roles, including elder, chairman of the cemetery, and chairman of the investment committee.

As a member of the Effinger Ruritan Club, Dave served in leadership roles and was instrumental in the restoration of the Palmer Community Center and the Ice Cream Supper.  He served on the board of the Rockbridge SPCA for many years.

As a graduate of the Randolph-Macon College Class of ’69, Dave was forever dedicated to supporting the college.  His football team was inducted into the R-MC Athletic Hall of Fame, which he had been instrumental in forming. Throughout his life he maintained a strong relationship with his teammates and fraternity brothers.  Dave was honored to have served on the board of trustees of the college for many years.

Dave loved life and outdoor activities.  He enjoyed golf with his buddies, fly fishing and skeet shooting with his son Tad, snow skiing and sailing trips with his family, and hiking and train trips with his wife Carolyn.

Dave was a true gentleman – trustworthy, thoughtful, considerate, generous, and helpful.  He always made sure his family, church, and community came first. He touched so many people and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

A celebration of life service will be conducted by the Rev. Kyle Segars on Thursday, March 20, at 2 p.m. at Oxford Presbyterian Church.  The service will be followed by a celebration of life reception at 4 p.m. at Kendal at Lexington.
