James Lloyd Arthur died on April 4, 2025, at home on the Arthur family farm at Buffalo Forge.  He was 95 years old. 

Son and first child of Samuel Washington Arthur and Rebecca Connor Arthur, he was born May 13, 1929, in Glasgow, and was educated locally and at Natural Bridge High School. His career took him to Washington and Lee University where he worked in its maintenance department and was tapped to be the college’s superintendent of buildings and grounds, which he led from 1972, retiring in 1994.  He served 30 years, during the tenure of four presidents of the university.

James is survived by Joyce Moore Arthur, his wife of 76 years, and by his children, Gary Arthur of Savannah, Ga., Barbara Arthur Bullock (and her husband Donald Bullock) of Lexington, Bennett Arthur (and his wife Sherri Thurston Arthur) of Glasgow; by his sister, Shirley Arthur McElroy of Roanoke; and sister-in-law Helen Gay Arthur of Glasgow.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Jack Calvin Arthur and George Edward Arthur, and a sister, Addie “Dolly” Wright Hager. 

Burial will be Thursday, April 10, at 2 p.m. at Falling Spring Presbyterian Church, where he was a lifelong active member.  The graveside service will be conducted by the Rev. Thomas Mainor of Williamsburg, a former minister of Falling Spring.
