Bonnie Jean Jackson Slater, 95, passed away peacefully at her home on Jan. 12.
Born on Aug. 30, 1927, in Williamson, W.Va., she was the only child of Robert Jerome Jackson and Alpha Hazel Lowe Jackson.
She was a graduate of Williamson High School and attended the University of Kentucky where she was a member of the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. In 1949, she wed Hart Slater and they were married for 67 years until his passing in 2017.
Surviving are their children, David Hart Slater (Beth) of Houston, Texas, Jeanne Slater Trimble (David) of Oak Hill, and Susan Slater Hartman (Jeff) of Cornelius, N.C. She was so proud of her grandchildren: Jill Slater (Tom Crosbie), Melanie Slater (Kyla Danysh), Benjamin Slater (Samantha), Robert Trimble (Christine), David Trimble (Katie), Byron Hartman (Lauren), Jeffrey Hartman (Erin) and Caroline Jarvis (Phil). She was preceded in death by grandson Tyler Hartman. She also loved seeing her 15 great-grandchildren: Rae and Calvin Crosbie, Theo and Millie Slater, Owen and Wyatt Trimble, Colette, Lana and Callan Trimble, Bennett and Virginia Hartman, Jackson Hartman, Tyler and Henry Jarvis, and Lydia Johnson.
After raising her family, Bonnie was the manager of the Lexington Visitor Center for several years and was a devoted volunteer at the Stonewall Jackson Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Shop. She was a member of Manly Memorial Baptist Church.
Her children are so very grateful to Dee Engleman and Jessica Hayslett for the loving care they provided our mother the past few years so she could remain in her home.
A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held on Saturday, Jan. 21, at 11 a.m. at Manly Memorial Baptist Church, 202 S. Main St., Lexington.
