Susan was born on Jan. 19, 1941, in Cape Charles. She attended Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, and took classes at Rutgers University in Princeton, N.J., before moving to Roanoke where she raised her family.
She had many interests there, including the Junior League of the Roanoke Valley and teaching Sunday school at Christ Episcopal Church.
She spent the last 31 years of her life in Buena Vista, and was an active member of St. John’s United Methodist Church, which included becoming the financial secretary for several years.
Susan loved baking, gardening and reading. She had a tremendous work ethic, led by example and instilled the importance of education and unconditional love and support in her family. Susan found a passion for hospice care and volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House of Southwest Virginia in Roanoke after the passing of her son Christian in 1984.
Many thanks to Missy Noel and her team of caregivers for the love and care extended to Susan during this time.
A memorial service will be held at St. John’s United Methodist Church in Buena Vista, with visitation to follow, on Monday, Sept. 11, at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Rockbridge County Hospice or St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
