Sandy Chittum, 89, formerly of Rockbridge County, died Jan. 30

 

Cicely Irene “Sandy” Kemp Chittum, age 89, formerly of Ingalls Street, Clifton Forge, and Denmark Farm in Lexington, died Monday, Jan. 30, 2023, at Regency at Augusta in Fishersville.

Sandy was born July 26, 1933, in Washington, D.C., to the late Bernard Clyde Kemp and Estelle Loraine English Keys. 

She was a retired registrar for Dabney S. Lancaster Community College. She also worked in the records department of Stonewall Jackson Hospital, as a volunteer for the Virginia Travel Service in Jerry’s Run, as a telephone operator, and as a secretary of the Central Office of the Clifton Forge school system.

A staunch Baptist throughout her life, Sandy either attended, or was a member of, Clifton Forge Baptist Church, Lexington Baptist Church, Goshen Baptist Church, or Kerrs Creek Baptist Church. She was also a former member of the Anata Shrine Guild.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Franklin Chittum Jr., in February of 2019, and a son, Michael Stephen Chittum, in 1978.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Natalia Chittum of Lexington; as well as a niece, Karen Lafon and husband Danny; and a nephew, Dwight Myers.

A graveside funeral service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 4, at 11 a.m. at Kerrs Creek Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Bryan Volpe officiating.  Interment will immediately follow.

The family will receive friends at the cemetery on Saturday.
