There is a song that says, “The road goes on forever and the party never ends.” These words could easily describe the life of Randy Huffman. Unfortunately, his time at this amazing party that we call life came to an unexpected end after 73 years on Mother’s Day, May 14, 2023.
Randolph Preston Huffman of Lexington was born Sept. 26, 1949, the oldest child of the late H. Randolph Huffman and Alene Rodes Huffman of Lexington. He graduated from Lexington High School in 1967 and later attended Ferrum College. He grew up working on the family dairy farm, along with helping his grandfather at the Green Valley Motel on weekends. In 1978 he and his brother David, along with their father, opened Green Valley RentAlls in Lexington. In 1984 he opened a second location in Low Moor. Both businesses rented a wide variety of tools, as well as being John Deere dealerships.
Randy’s hospitality was legendary. He always made room for one more at his pool table, his kitchen counter, or on the summer porch at the homeplace, where he welcomed friends and family with open arms and plenty of jokes and stories. He always had something good on the stove or grill, as well as a cold beer in the fridge, and anything he had, he shared with a free heart.
Randy loved to entertain with his music. He spent his entire life playing drums in all kinds of bands covering almost any genre from rock to blues, soul and even a stint in a Dixieland band. Two of the more notable bands were the Lucky Pierre Blues Band and Loose Gravel. If it had a beat, he was on time.
He was preceded in death by his parents, as well as his brother David R. Huffman, his ex-wife Susan Stauffer, and his sweetheart Mary Wright.
He is survived by sons Preston R. Huffman of Blacksburg and John R. Huffman of Greenville; sister Mary Huffman Ruley of Lexington; brother Robert F. Huffman and wife Tamela of Lexington; and sister-in-law Winifred H. Huffman of Lexington; as well as six nieces and nephews and two greatnephews.
A celebration of life will be held Saturday, July 29, at the Mill Hole. Arrangements are by Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory.
