Electoral Board Responds To Letter
Electoral Board Responds To Letter
Jan. 23, 2023 Editor, The News Gazette: I am writing in response to a letter to the editor in the Jan. 18 edition from Cynthia Atkins regarding a polling precinct being located in a religious facility. On behalf of the Rockbridge Electoral Board, I would like to address several concerns Ms. Atkins expressed in her letter. 01/24/2023 11:00 PM

Cline Not Fighting For Free, Fair Elections
Jan. 23, 2023 Editor, The News-Gazette: When Ben Cline was our Virginia state delegate, I met with him several times requesting his support of antigerrymandering legislation in Richmond. Although he acknowledged the tacit unfairness of politicians selecting their own voters, and claimed he would work to find a compromise, he never followed through. Instead, he fell in line with his political party and opposed any efforts to establish fair redistricting rules. Despite their stonewalling, a groundbreaking anti-gerrymandering law was passed by our state legislature, which now serves as a template for other states. 01/24/2023 11:00 PM

Coverage Of MLK Parade Appreciated
Jan. 22, 2023 Editor, The News-Gazette: Since I was not able to attend the MLK march on the 16th, I really enjoyed your photographic coverage of the event. The pictures really told the story: a huge turnout of local folks celebrating the progress toward justice we’ve made so far and committed to the ongoing work of righting age-old and persistent wrongs. It is great to see a full page of good news! Thanks to all those who organized these events. ANNE HANSEN Rockbridge Baths 01/24/2023 11:00 PM

Creigh Deeds of the 25th District are representing all of Rockbridge County, Buena Vista and Lexington. Later this year, all 140 members of the General Assembly will be up for election in redrawn districts. 01/17/2023 11:00 PM

Short-Term vs. Long Term, Again
Short-Term vs. Long Term, Again
I think about the pull between short-term and long-term rewards fairly often, and I’ve written about the ill effects of the quest for short-term gain over long-term sustainability in our newspaper industry. I see this phenomenon playing out more often, it seems, and over a variety of issues. 01/17/2023 11:00 PM

‘Let’s Get To Work’ With Harris

Reject Modern Design
Reject Modern Design
Editor, The News-Gazette: I totally agree with the opinion offered about the proposed ugly and tasteless building planned for Lexington. I agree with Jacke Rose Boston. My husband and I have friends in Lexington and we have visited the area almost every year with hope of living there some day in the future. The design of this building has no aesthetic appeal and due to the squareness of the design is cheaper to build, which is likely the reason for the decision for the proposed “modern” design. It would be strongly recommended to keep new buildings proposed for Lexington in keeping with the traditional designs of homes and businesses in the community. 01/03/2023 11:00 PM
Redo Rendering To Resemble Collaborative’s
Redo Rendering To Resemble Collaborative’s
Editor, The News-Gazette: Thank you for presenting your views on the Echelon project in the Dec. 28 edition of The News-Gazette. I completely agree with your suggestion to City Council to revisit the current Echelon plans. A rendering that would more closely resemble the Spotswood Collaborative proposal would be more appropriate to the site and needs of Lexington. City Council will then have a more complete view of what is needed for Lexington regarding the number of units, the architectural aesthetics and the traffic patterns created by this project. 01/03/2023 11:00 PM

Editor, The News-Gazette: There is a lot of bad news these days. It is hard not to feel discouraged, But that is only part of the picture. Having lived a long life, I have the advantage of noticing how much progress has been made and how far we have come in our democratic experiment. Like all Southerners of a certain age, I attended racially segregated schools and lived in a society legally divided by race. As a young female attorney, I was denied employment because of my gender. Such discrimination was legal. Elected officials, decision makers and institutional leaders were almost exclusively white men. 01/03/2023 11:00 PM
