As the Rockbridge NAACP prepares to enter a fourth year of supporting area students with funds from the Ted DeLaney grant program, the chapter reports that it has provided upwards of $20,000 for higher education and summer and afterschool programs in its first three years of giving.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture recently released an updated plant hardiness zone map and the new map suggests Rockbridge County is slightly warmer than suggested by the previous plant hardiness zone map released in 2012.

Melissa R. Kerin, associate professor of art history at Washington and Lee University, has been selected as the next Roger Mudd Professor of Ethics and director of the university’s Roger Mudd Center for Ethics.

A helicopter is to be used to transport components for power transmission line towers that are to be erected alongside U.S. 501 between the Balcony Falls substation at Glasgow and Amherst County. The new towers are to replace existing ones that are nearly 100 years old as part of a modernization project of the utility infrastructure.

A local company played a big role in helping set up the command operations center at the Stonebridge building at Natural Bridge Station, formerly Natural Bridge High School, during the effort to contain the Matts Creek fire.
