Listening To Veterans

The Raphine Volunteer Fire Department served up approximately 260 ham and turkey meals this past Saturday night at its annual Thanksgiving dinner. Diners had the option of eating inside the fire department or taking their dinners home. This year a lot of people chose to eat their suppers at the fire department. “It was an exceptional crowd,” said Fire Chief Bruce Brooks. “It was definitely one of the biggest Thanksgiving dinners we’ve had.” (Joann Ware photos)

Washington and Lee University’s Ryan Brindle, assistant professor of cognitive and behavioral science, and Dave Pfaff, senior academic technologist and director of the IQ Center, were both honored with individual awards at the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges’ (VFIC) annual Fall Luncheon and Harris Family Awards Presentation in Richmond on Thursday, Nov. 2.

Members of the County’s Public Safety Committee, Supervisors Leslie Ayers and Bob Day, stopped by the Glasgow Life Saving and First Aid Crew to look at the new Stryker Power Load System that was recently installed. The Board of Supervisors supported and approved a request from the Volunteer Fire & Rescue Association, which resulted in the purchase of 11 Lucas CPR assist devices, one for each EMS agency in the county, and four Styker Power Load Systems. In addition to Glasgow’s, a power load system will be installed at Fairfield Volunteer Rescue, Kerrs Creek Fire-EMS and a county ambulance. Republican incumbents in last week’s elections claimed the three reconfigured districts in the General Assembly that encompass all or parts of the Rockbridge area. Republicans were also victorious in all state Senate races for districts west of the Blue Ridge.

The “choice” term is not new to politics. During the Lincoln-Douglas debates of 1858, the two were running for the Senate and both agreed the existence of slavery in existing states was a done deal but they debated the question of free or slave state for Kansas, Nebraska and future western territories.

A veteran tourism director who grew up in Lexington has been selected to be the new director of Rockbridge Regional Tourism.

The Lexington School Board was presented with updated draft policies for selection and removal of library and instructional materials at its meeting last week.

Nov. 10, 2023 Editor, The News-Gazette: I served as the local Republican Party’s official observer (“poll watcher”) at the Lexington precinct for the eight-hour morning shift this past Election Day. In this time of often-credible evidence of electoral malfeasance, I am pleased to report that I neither witnessed nor had reason to suspect the least lapse in ethical conduct on the part of any election officers on duty that day.

I am so proud to be a Rockbridge County citizen. I want to express my deepest gratitude for the support shown to me in my campaign for treasurer. It’s been an incredible journey. I am excited to start this new chapter in my professional career and I’m looking forward to continuing my service in my new role. As I stressed in my campaign, I will see that all taxpayers are treated fairly and honestly. I look forward to the opportunity to work with all branches of county government and extremely excited in working as a team with our newly elected Commissioner of the Revenue.
