Getting Ready For Garden Week
Getting Ready For Garden Week

Preparations are underway for the Historic Garden Week tour in Lexington on April 22, sponsored by the Blue Ridge Garden Club. At one of the houses on the tour, Stonegate on South Main Street, members view photos from the past of the circa 1832 home with Margaret Hutton, owner of Stonegate. Pictured are Leslie Bovay, Nancy McLaughlin, Hutton, Barbara Walsh and Nancy Sullivan, chair of this year’s tour. Also on the tour this year are Kappa Alpha’s Mulberry Hill, the Soltis house on South Main and the gardens of Belfield, which are located next door to Mulberry Hill. Online tickets are available now at www.vagardenweek.org. Advance tickets are $25, and same-day tickets will be $35, sold at the Lexington Visitor Center.

Scientist, W&L President Featured In Latest Epilogue

Henry Louis Smith was an eminent scientist who in 1896 developed the first practical medical use for X-rays. Smith later devised a system for infiltrating Axis lines with Allied propaganda that helped hasten the end of World War I, for which Woodrow Wilson praised him fulsomely. Smith was the president of two colleges, one of them Washington and Lee University (1912-29).

The Virginia Department of Forestry (VDOF) joins fire departments throughout the commonwealth to raise awareness about fire safety this spring. Due to weather conditions, available “fuel,” and increased recreational activity, the possibility of wildfires surges this time of year. Earlier this month, several wildfires were contained in western regions of the state.
