State’s Spring Burn Law Takes Effect
The Virginia Department of Forestry (VDOF) joins fire departments throughout the commonwealth to raise awareness about fire safety this spring. Due to weather conditions, available “fuel,” and increased recreational activity, the possibility of wildfires surges this time of year. Earlier this month, several wildfires were contained in western regions of the state.

VMI English Professor Pens New Mystery With Help From Fellowship
Lt. Col. Mary “Polly” Stewart Atwell, associate professor in the Department of English, Rhetoric, and Humanistic Studies at Virginia Military Institute, received a highly comp etitive, fully funded 10-day residency fellowship at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts (VCCA) in Amherst where she recently devoted time working on her second and third novels.

Atkins Teaching Writing Workshop
Local author and educator Cynthia Atkins will be teaching a creative writing workshop, “Tell Your Story/Find Your Voice,” in six sessions beginning Tuesday, March 14, through Tuesday, April 18, 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Blue Ridge Community College.

The STARTALK Arabic Program’s applications have opened, and the tentative dates for this year’s program are June 26-July 23, and will run Monday through Friday each week from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The STARTALK program funds tuition costs for six hours of college credit for this summer program. Scientist, W&L President Featured In Latest Epilogue
Henry Louis Smith was an eminent scientist who in 1896 developed the first practical medical use for X-rays. Smith later devised a system for infiltrating Axis lines with Allied propaganda that helped hasten the end of World War I, for which Woodrow Wilson praised him fulsomely. Smith was the president of two colleges, one of them Washington and Lee University (1912-29).

W&L English Department To Show, Discuss Horror Film
The Department of English at Washington and Lee University will present a public film screening of Jordan Peele’s “NOPE” on Wednesday, March 1, at 6 p.m. in Stackhouse Theater, followed by a discussion. The film screening is free and open to the public, and no tickets are required.

Getting Ready For Garden Week
Preparations are underway for the Historic Garden Week tour in Lexington on April 22, sponsored by the Blue Ridge Garden Club. At one of the houses on the tour, Stonegate on South Main Street, members view photos from the past of the circa 1832 home with Margaret Hutton, owner of Stonegate. Pictured are Leslie Bovay, Nancy McLaughlin, Hutton, Barbara Walsh and Nancy Sullivan, chair of this year’s tour. Also on the tour this year are Kappa Alpha’s Mulberry Hill, the Soltis house on South Main and the gardens of Belfield, which are located next door to Mulberry Hill. Online tickets are available now at www.vagardenweek.org. Advance tickets are $25, and same-day tickets will be $35, sold at the Lexington Visitor Center.
