Site Process Just Starting, Says Attorney

The Lexington and Buena Vista city councils pledged both support and funding for the Hope House project at their respective meetings last Thursday.

The consensus among folks who have commented publicly on Lexington City Council’s recent decision to approve a Gold Star Memorial is that they support the concept of honoring families in our community who have lost loved ones in military conflicts. Everyone appears to be supportive of the idea of such a memorial – just not necessarily at the proposed site at Jordans Point Park.

To begin each monthly meeting, the Lexington School Board takes a moment to recognize teachers, students, or individuals and groups within the LCS community that make a significant impact on the district’s day-to-day operations.

Tracey Taylor, 47, of Buena Vista was sentenced in Buena Vista Circuit Court last Thursday, receiving a sentence of nine years for two felony charges, with all but 14 months suspended. She also received fines for a pair of misdemeanor convictions.

Lexington City Schools is ensuring that students have access to nutritional resources as the School Board considers two updated nutritional policies.

Rose Wallace retired from the Rockbridge Area Community Services Board Feb. 28 after 15 years of service.

Issue Arose During Echelon Discussion

As of April 20, Jeremy Carroll is no longer Lexington’s interim city attorney, as City Council voted to appoint him to the role of city attorney.

The Rockbridge Area Relief Association celebrated its 50th anniversary this past Saturday at its headquarters at the Piovano building on Spotswood Drive. A tasty assortment of nibbles was provided by Ladles & Linens. Pronto served up sfogliatelle and cannoli for dessert. Beer was supplied by Devils Backbone and wine by Sassaia. Datz Us Ramblers were on hand for musical entertainment and activities such as face painting and a bounce house were available for the children in attendance. The organization provides food through its Neighborhood Grocery (formerly known as the food pantry) and offers assistance for people who are struggling to pay their bills. (Joann Ware photos)

The George C. Marshall Foundation will host its annual community open house in honor of the 59th anniversary of the dedication of its building in Lexington on Sunday, May 7, at 1:30 p.m. at its building on VMI post. Activities include tours of the library and archives, artifact show-and-tell, games, door prizes, and refreshments.

ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARINGS

A new state historical marker has been approved for downtown Lexington.

Former Virginia Military Institute superintendent Lt. Gen. Josiah Bunting III greets a guest at a ceremony last month recognizing his recent contributions to VMI’s archives. Twenty-six containers of Bunting’s papers, ranging from his time as a VMI cadet in the 1960s through 2020, were donated to VMI. Bunting served as VMI’s superintendent from 1995 to 2003 and oversaw the school’s transition to coeducation. For the story on his papers and his visit to Lexington, see page B7. With little discussion Monday, the Rockbridge County Board of Supervisors approved a general fund budget for fiscal year 2024 that includes equalized real estate and personal property car tax rates.
