Students, Staff Embrace New Learning Opportunities

The Institute for Organization Management, the professional development program of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, has announced that Tracy E. Lyons, executive director of the Chamber of Commerce Serving Lexington, Buena Vista, and Rockbridge County, has graduated from the program and has received the recognition of IOM.

Appointments Made

As it prepares for major renovations to the Rockbridge Innovation Center, Rockbridge County High School has recently been awarded a $125,000 career and technical education grant. These funds will go towards purchasing and upgrading manufacturing systems equipment at the center.

The Goshen Volunteer Fire Department “A-Team” won the first annual Fire Fighters Challenge tug-of-war at the Rockbridge Breakfast Club’s Celebrate Rockbridge event this past Saturday at Brewbaker Field. The team was presented with the Devin Riley Memorial Fire Fighters Challenge trophy by Congressman Ben Cline and Rockbridge Fire-Rescue Chief Nathan Ramsey. Glen Mon, chairman of the Rockbridge Breakfast Club, served as master of ceremonies for the fire fighters challenge activity.

The South River District Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department’s 69th annual carnival took place on the carnival grounds in Fairfield last week. On Saturday night, Dorsey Hostetter and the Tri Country Band performed (top left). This year there were no midway rides, but children could play in several inflatable bounce houses (top right). Games of skill were popular at the carnival, including the goldfish bowl toss (at far left). Food was available each night, including the company’s barbecue chicken. A very special silver anniversary is taking place this Friday and Saturday, July 28 and 29, at Glen Maury Park – the 25th Bank of Botetourt Beach Music Festival.

Artists in Cahoots will feature the meditative, sumi-e brush paintings of former gallery member Virginia Lloyd-Davis as she demonstrates her painting technique on Friday, Aug. 4, from 5 to 7 p.m.

Beau Leech and Sarah Edwards were married at Oxford Church on Saturday afternoon, July 22. After the ceremony they traveled to their reception in a big shiny John Deere tractor. Congratulations and best wishes to Beau and Sarah.

The Hall family reunion was held Sunday, July 16, at the Palmer Community Center. Sixty descendants of William Merset and Sadie Belle Deacon Hall registered at the annual family gathering and covered-dish picnic. In addition to local residents, Virginia family members came from Front Royal, Glen Allen, Goshen, Herndon, Lexington, Natural Bridge Station, Salem, and White Post.
