Preliminary Cost Estimate $9.1 Million

The Virginia Military Institute corps of cadets honored those who perished in the 9/11 terrorist attacks by climbing 110 flights of stairs in barracks Monday, replicating the number of stories first responders at the World Trade Center climbed during the rescue attempt, and in memory of those who lost their lives that day.

A memorial service for Richard K. “Dick” Rathmell, who died Feb. 12, will be held Saturday, Sept. 30, at 2 p.m., at Grace Episcopal Church in Lexington. A reception at the church will follow.

The forecast was gloomy for the annual Rockbridge Beer & Wine Festival at Lime Kiln Theater Saturday, but that did not keep people away. Showers made the big tent a popular place to gather, but those who came prepared for the rain enjoyed the music of Little Marvin and the Martians in the Bowl Theater. The four local wineries were present at the event, as well as vineyards like Fincastle’s Virginia Mountain Vineyard. Food trucks supplied hungry festival attendees a variety of options including barbecue and wood-fired pizza. The event is organized each year by the Lexington-Rockbridge Chamber of Commerce. Raising funds for the Parry McCluer High School cross country teams, the annual Labor Day 5-kilometer running race and 600-meter kids’ fun run welcomed 55 participants on Monday of last week in Buena Vista.
