Restaurant Closing Brings Thoughts
Restaurant Closing Brings Thoughts

July 13, 2023 Editor, The News-Gazette: While there may have been more shocking and disappointing headlines in your newspaper since The Lexington Gazette started up in 1801, I will leave that up to local historians. But when I saw “Southern Inn Restaurant Closes” heading in last week’s edition, that was it for me. Another local restaurant just didn’t close its doors. A Lexington landmark, lighted sign and all, went dim. It became off-limits, not just to VMI cadets.

Support For Peace Corps Act Encouraged

July 14, 2023 Editor, The News-Gazette: As a returned Peace Corps volunteer who served in Jamaica from 1972 to 1974, I am urging Representative Cline and Senators Warner and Kaine to support the Peace Corps Reauthorization Act (HR 1273/S 1203) which is currently up for approval in Congress. This act will renew funding and provide needed updates to volunteer support services. In 2019, there were over 7,000 volunteers serving; today, post-pandemic, 1,200 volunteers have now returned to 51 countries. Tractor-Driving Queen

Miss Rockbridge Regional Fair 2022, Sofia Fleming, as a sixth-generation American farmer, felt that it was natural to drive her family‘s decorated tractor in the Happy Birthday America Parade in Staunton on the Fourth of July. The creativity and unusualness of a pageant queen driving a tractor caught the attention of the crowd and the judges. She won the Extraordinaire Award - The Most Outstanding Parade Entry. The deadline for entering this year’s Miss Rockbridge Fair Pageant, scheduled for Aug. 5 at RCHS, is July 28.
