July 17, 2023 Editor, The News-Gazette: The free enterprise system is under threat.

Forty-five years ago this summer, a divided U.S. Supreme Court, in a ruling authored by Associate Justice Lewis F. Powell – a distinguished alumnus of Washington and Lee University – held that colleges and universities could consider race as one factor among others in admissions decisions. This was the law of the land until two weeks ago, when the court ruled that race could no longer be considered in determining which students are admitted.

According to a recent article in The New York Times, cottage cheese, the lumpy dairy product embraced by my mother’s generation as a necessary component of any reducing diet, is enjoying a bump in popularity. This is due in part to members of the online platform TikTok pairing it with yellow mustard to create a healthy alternative to calorie-laden dips containing either sour cream, cream cheese or both.

You open your bank statement to do your monthly account reconciliation, (yes, you do this religiously every month), and you see a check you don’t recognize. It’s not in your check register as a paper check or debit transaction. You don’t recognize the payee. You realize that it’s a very clever forgery – the image of the check has the correct bank routing number and your account number, and even your printed name and address and the bank name - but it’s not your check. And it’s for a significant amount of money.

June 28, 2023 Editor, The News-Gazette: Public utility corporations are different in different states. Here in Virginia, our PUC is called the State Corporation Commission, and has three members who are appointed by the governor with the authority to regulate utilities.

Natural Bridge State Park has been operating like any of the other state parks in Virginia the past seven years, with one peculiar distinction – the state didn’t own it. The Virginia Conservation Legacy Fund acquired the iconic limestone arch and accompanying 1,500 acres in 2014 from Angelo Puglisi when the long-time Natural Bridge owner was preparing to subdivide and auction off the property.

The political crisis caused by the death of “Lord Protector” of England Oliver Cromwell in 1658 led to Parliament inviting Charles II, then in exile across the Channel, to return as the sovereign of England, Scotland, and Ireland.

The folks who live in Brownsburg are passionate about preserving the village’s rural and historical character. That would be an easy conclusion to draw for anyone who attended or viewed online the past two meetings of the Rockbridge County Planning Commission in which a rezoning request for a Brownsburg property was considered.
