Calvary Brethren Church will offer a trunkor- treat event on Tuesday, Oct. 31, from 6 to 8 p.m., featuring not only candy but food and beverages.

During downtown Buena Vista’s Spooktacular event, Rockbridge Community Church of the Nazarene will welcome candy seekers and their families with even more treats and an affordable meal.

New Monmouth Presbyterian Church will have a special presentation by Karen Swallow Prior on Saturday, Nov. 4, at 2 p.m.

A large crowd turned out for the annual trunk-or-treat event across from the Effinger firehouse Saturday that is sponsored by seven Collierstown area churches. The cakewalk held during the event raised over $400 that went to the community’s Rise Against Hunger Meal program and the Challenger Baseball League for disabled children in Roanoke. The participating churches were the Collierstown Baptist, Collierstown Presbyterian, Collierstown United Methodist. Oxford Presbyterian, Mt. Life Chapel will present New Life Supper: Candypalooza on Oct. 30 at 6 p.m. at Life Chapel, 70 Hines Lane.

The Music at Noon concert series at Lexington Presbyterian Church returns on Wednesday, Nov. 1, at noon, with a program of music on All Saints Day.

Hallelujah night, a Christian-themed alternative to Halloween celebrations for children of all ages, will be held Tuesday, Oct. 31, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Lexington Foursquare Gospel Church and the Rockbridge Christian Academy, 21 Snowy Egret Lane, north of Lexington just off of U.S. 11.

A 12-year veteran of the House of Delegates, Republican Del. Christopher Head of Botetourt County is seeking election this fall to the state Senate in newly reconfigured District 3, which encompasses all of the Rockbridge area.

Jade Harris, former Glasgow vice mayor who is making her second run for a seat in the General Assembly in less than a year, said she found herself “frustrated at the sluggish pace” of the state budgeting process this year.

“Our board works as a team to work for the betterment of Buena Vista schools. I feel I have been a contributing member of the team. My experiences, past and present, have proven invaluable during my terms as a Buena Vista School Board member,” said Teressa Ellison, current chair of the Buena Vista School Board, who is running for reelection.

Wayne Flint is running for reelection to the Buena Vista School Board.

“I am in it for the long haul. I want a collective school board who wants to work together. I love our school system and I want what is best for our kids in this system,” said Brooke Baker, running for the Buena Vista School Board.

“Our schools are the backbone of the community. For the community to be prosperous and successful, our schools have to be first-rate. That attracts industry, that attracts new families,” said Allen “Mac” Felts, running for reelection to the Buena Vista School Board.

“I don’t have answers to all the questions, but I’m willing to work hard and I’m willing to learn, and I’m willing to work with others, because we are a team,” said Paula Charlton, running for the Buena Vista School Board.
