The students of Rockbridge Christian Academy held its annual Shoebox Packing Day on Monday. The shoebox gifts were filled with toys, school supplies, and hygiene items for children around the world. Students brought in the items, packed the boxes in the classrooms and then had a dedication ceremony where they prayed for those that would receive the boxes. The students packed 84 boxes. The Jackson River Governor’s School for Science, Mathematics and Technology (JRGS) this past summer celebrated the accomplishments of its students with an annual awards ceremony.
Main Street Lexington is sponsoring a series of festive events in downtown to mark the holiday season.
As the holiday season approaches, the Virginia Military Institute is planning festivities not only on the VMI post, but also at the New Market Battlefield State Historical Park and the Jackson House Museum.
The Rockbridge Youth Chorale will present its fall concert on Tuesday, Nov. 28, 7:30 pm at Grace Episcopal Church. Admission to the RYC concerts is a suggested minimum donation of $5/ student or child, $10/adult, or $25/family. The community is invited to share in this special night of music making.
The Rockbridge Chorus, directed by William McCorkle, will present its annual holiday program on Saturday, Dec. 2, at 7:30 p.m., in the Lexington Presbyterian Church. As in previous years, the evening will begin with a community carol sing at 7:15.
The Music at Noon concert series at Lexington Presbyterian Church will return in December. Three concerts are scheduled for Wednesdays at noon on Dec. 6, 13 and 20.
One of the more popular, perennial holiday events in the area is the Rockbridge Christmas Baskets’ Packing Day. Marking its 76th year of service to the communities of Rockbridge County, Lexington and Buena Vista, Rockbridge Christmas Baskets will be welcoming packing volunteers on Saturday, Dec. 9, at the Virginia Horse Center’s Anderson Coliseum from 8 a.m. to noon.
A number of holiday events are taking place in Rockbridge Baths over the next several weeks. The first of these is the lighting of the Swinging Bridge on Sunday, Nov. 26, at 5:30 p.m. People will gather on the Terrell Lane side of the bridge to sing Christmas carols, turn on the bridge lights, take pictures with Santa and enjoy cider, hot chocolate and other refreshments.
Boxerwood’s annual Gifts of Nature workshop will be held on Saturday, Dec. 9, from 1 to 5 p.m. Participants are encouraged to bring friends and family to craft decorations that feed the winter birds and spruce up your home, inside and out.
The Paxton House will be decked out for Christmas when visitors are welcomed into the historic home on Sunday, Dec. 10, from 2 to 4 p.m. Guests will enjoy refreshments and holiday cheer. They will be encouraged to walk through the house and see the recently acquired furnishings.
Glen Maury Park is inviting area businesses, churches and nonprofit groups to set up their own light displays at the park this upcoming holiday season.
The holiday season in Buena Vista is ushered in on Thursday, Dec. 7, with a Christmas tree lighting ceremony at 6:30 p.m. in the city square at the corner of 21st Street and Magnolia Avenue, to be followed by the Christmas parade along Magnolia Avenue, beginning at 7 p.m.
Two visitor-favorite events are returning to Natural Bridge State Park this holiday season: Festival of Trees and Luminary Lights.
