Bobby Slagle of Rockbridge Recovery was recently presented with the Exceptional Volunteerism Award.

The Lexington Branch of the English speaking Union (ESU) is sponsoring the 2024 National Shakespeare Competition. The competition will be held on Jan. 13, 2024, at Blackfriar’s Theater in Staunton.

The Rosa Harris Memorial Clothing Closet in the downstairs fellowship hall of First Baptist Church of Lexington, will be open on Saturday, Oct. 21, from 9 a.m. until noon.

Stevi is all ready for Halloween! What a big diva in her costume. She is 2 years old and loves to eat. Stevi has been at the Rockbridge SPCA since December and longs for a home to call her own. She is very sweet, loves going for walks, fully vaccinated, spayed, dewormed, heartworm negative, all for the low fee of just $25 with approved application. Great Day For Mill Day

The Steamboat Institute, with major support from the Adolph Coors Foundation, has announced the fourth in a series of eight Campus Liberty Tour events for 2023, debating the question, “Do Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives do more harm than good in higher education, and should they be abolished?”

Author Lynn Coffey will discuss her legacy of documenting oral histories in Virginia on Oct. 21, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Paxton House in Glen Maury Park. The program is sponsored by the Paxton House Historical Society.

Rockbridge Bird Club will hold this month’s Second Saturday morning bird walk on the Chessie Nature Trail rather than at Boxerwood while the nature center readies its “Spectacle 2023: A Wild Notion!” Walks are guided by club members and are open to all.

A potluck meal and a program on “The History of Rockbridge Baths” will be presented on Sunday, Oct. 22, at 1 p.m. at the Rockbridge Baths firehouse.

The Chamber Music Society of Lexington is presenting two upcoming concerts at Grace Episcopal Church, 123 W. Washington St., Lexington.

The Women’s Fellowship of the Stone Church of the Brethren will be serving breakfast and lunch at the American Legion building during Mountain Days in Buena Vista this Saturday, Oct. 14.
